The idea, like many of her ideas, came to LaQuina Fladger in a dream, and she is working hard to make her dream a reality.
Fladger, also known as Quana and Q, likes to help people and likes to get people together to have fun and raise money for good causes.
So, that’s why she will host Q’s Fancy Hat & Tea Party on May 1 at East Franklin Fire Department, Station 27, 121 Pine Grove in Somerset, with a portion of the proceeds to benefit breast cancer research and combating domestic violence.
“I do believe dreams come true,” she said. “The mission of my event is to empower, motivate and inspire.”
Tickets for Q’ Fancy Hat and Tea Party just went on sale, and a part of the proceeds will be donated to The Resource Center of Somerset, dedicated to serving those who have been impacted by domestic abuse and The American Cancer Society. There will be guest speakers, poetry, music, vendors, line dancing, raffles, desserts, refreshments and more.
“The fun is going to take off right here in Somerset, New Jersey, for some worthwhile causes,” she said.
In October, Fladger hosted Q’s Hair and Fashion Explosion, with a portion of proceeds benefiting the Mental Health Associate of New Jersey and Community Hope of New Jersey, which aids veterans and military families.
“That idea started from a dream, too,” she said. “I used to model as a young girl, and so I guess it came from there. It was a very successful event, and we had a lot of fun, so I got to thinking it was time for another one.”
“I didn’t want to do another fashion show right away,” the Somerset resident said. “I wanted to do something spunky and fun. I thought of Q’s Fancy Hat and Tea Party while I was dreaming. Spring’s about to come around, and I was noticing people are wearing more hats than usual, all kinds of hats. I know all women in church love hats, big fancy hats. Even little girls are wearing hats these days. I thought how about a hat event where people can come together, wear a fancy hat that personalizes then, and have a nice tea. People enjoys teas and desserts and the hats will break the ice.”
Fladger said she picked breast cancer to donate money to as “I was noticing more women are suffering from breast cancer, and domestic violence is just terrible, so why not combine the two? Survivors of both have a story to tell.” She is looking for speakers about both to share their experiences during the event.
“I think people in the audience will want to hear those stories, and it might increase the chance that people will make a change in their own lives with the information they learn,” she said.
“People in the Somerset area are always saying they wish there were more social events available and more going on,” Fladger added. “They have the feeling the fun is only in New York or Philadelphia. The fun is going to begin at this event.”
Live music will be provided by DJ Flyy Grl, and there will be spoken word poetry, guest speakers, line dancing, raffles, door prizes, great snacks and lots of fun vendors. Vendors who have signed up so far are offering soaps, hair products, hats, jewelry, natural herbal teas and face products. She said they are still accepting vendors.
Fladger added that the host was Lawrence Ben Miles, known as the women’s advocate of the New York Women’s Chamber of Commerce.
“This event is about helping others,” she said. “I hope it inspires people to do more, to step out of themselves. I hope it motivates and empowers change.”
Tickets for Q’s Fancy Hat & Tea Party are $20 in advance, and $30 at the door. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org for more information or to buy tickets. The event will be conducted at East Franklin Fire Department, Station 27,

NYCEDC is committed to strengthen its manufacturing base by accelerating the emergence of early stage companies using or developing advanced technologies. This program is aimed at supporting the growth of promising companies in New York City and at better understanding the particular challenges faced by early stage companies in the advanced manufacturing space.
The Program will provide selected companies up to $30,000 of funding over a two-year period to finance their growth in New York City. The financing will be delivered in three phases. The largest share of the funding will be distributed at the beginning of the program; the outstanding funding will be disbursed in two payments respectively after 12 and 18 months. The Program will also facilitate the companies’ access to apply for sales tax exemptions through IDA’s Accelerated Sales Tax Exemption Program, to reduce the cost of purchasing equipment over the same time period. Applications are due on December 14, 2015.
